Dan Vito creates functional and sculptural pottery rooted in the physical language of clay. Rather than painting or drawing on surfaces, he works with marks impressed directly into the clay using simple tools, wood pieces, and handmade stamps. Surfaces develop through sprayed layers of glaze, often including ash glazes that interact during firing to produce shifting textures and color. Because of these layered surfaces, each piece can reveal different qualities depending on how it is viewed. Primarily gas‑fired, with occasional wood firings, his work reflects an appreciation for pottery’s historic place in human ritual and daily use.
