PITTSBURGH – All-session and group tickets are on sale now for the 2020 FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL), set for May 22-24 at the Petersen Events Center and hosted by the International Volleyball Federation, USA Volleyball, SportsPITTSBURGH and the Petersen Events Center.
Tickets are available here.
The three-day competition will be the lone appearance for the No. 3-ranked U.S. Men’s National Team on U.S. soil this year. The event will serve as the first of many warmups for the squad leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.
“Pittsburgh is honored to welcome the U.S. Men’s National Team and to host its only state-side appearance in 2020,” SportsPITTSBURGH Executive Director Jennifer Hawkins said. “Support for volleyball within our region continues to grow, and we are excited to host these elite international athletes in our city and provide them with iconic experiences. Our goal is to give the U.S. Men a proper Pittsburgh sendoff before they compete in Tokyo later this year.”
Pittsburgh is the U.S. Men’s first stop during the preliminary round of VNL and the only tour stop in the United States. The squad will face top-ranked Brazil, No. 5 Argentina and No. 10 Canada over Memorial Day Weekend. All four teams have qualified for the Tokyo Games.
The VNL consists of 16 top men’s volleyball teams playing a round-robin format, with each country hosting a weekend of matches over six weeks. Six teams will advance to the final round.
Previously, the U.S. Men captured Silver at the 2019 VNL Final Round and Bronze in 2018. The team won the Gold Medal in 2008 and 2014.
The U.S. Men’s National Team has several ties to Pennsylvania, including middle blocker Mitch Stahl, a Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, native. A trio of team members played collegiately at Penn State University: opposite Matt Anderson, middle blocker Max Holt and outside hitter Aaron Russell.
Pittsburgh is a regional hotbed for volleyball. Just this past December, the city welcomed the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, with more than 30,000 fans enjoying the sport over two days at PPG Paints Arena. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Convention was held congruently at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLCC) and recorded its third-best attendance in conference history. In 2018, Pittsburgh hosted the NCAA’s Division II and Division III Women’s Championships at Duquesne University. Additionally, the DLCC is the annual host of the East Coast Championships, a competition for 366 girls club teams, and the Steel City Freeze, which welcomed 270 boys and girls youth teams earlier this month.
