The Global Language of Headwear
The Global Language of Headwear exhibition features 89 hats and headdresses from 42 countries across the continents. Most date from the mid-to-late 20th century, and many are still in use for revelry, ritual, and the everyday rhythms of life today. The range of shapes, styles, materials and embellishments is limited only by imagination. Each one is a unique work of art—not merely because of the skill required to make it, but the singular expression of creativity and cultural meaning behind the making. The exhibit is organized into five thematic sections: Cultural Identity; Power; Prestige and Status; Ceremonies and Celebrations; Spiritual Beliefs; and Protection that will be further explored through complementing public programming. As a whole, The Global Language of Headwear is not only communicating timeless ideas of beauty but what it means to be human.
The galleries are open Tuesdays - Thursday 11 am - 8 pm, Saturdays - Sundays 11 am - 4 pm. Gallery admission is free.
